‘Palm Royale’ stars Kristin Wiig and Ricky Martin reveal why their characters don’t get along.

For better or worse, every eye in the room is fixed on Maxine Simmons when she walks in.

Kristen Wiig plays the principal character in “Palm Royale,” and she is quite the character. The former beauty pageant competitor is from Chattanooga, Tennessee; she has brilliant blonde hair, a heavy Southern accent, oddball mannerisms, and a terrific sense of style, and she is unabashedly herself. She is on a mission, too.

The first three episodes of the new Apple TV+ series, which is set in 1969, were released on March 20. In them, viewers were introduced to Maxine and her unwavering quest to fit in with Palm Beach’s elite society. It’s a narrative about those who have and those who don’t, and the lengths individuals will go to in order to live affluent and glamorous lives. The 2018 novel “Mr. & Mrs. American Pie” by Juliet McDaniel served as the basis for the television series, despite the fact that the two works are very unlike.

 

While caring for her husband Douglas’s (Josh Lucas) affluent aunt and Palm Beach queen bee, Norma (Carol Burnett), who has suffered an embolism and is in a coma, Maxine implements her plan. Norma is renowned for organizing the Beach Ball, the season-ending celebration. Maxine steps in as the much-awaited event’s replacement host when Norma is unable to do so.

But Maxine doesn’t deceive Ricky Martin’s character, Robert Diaz, who works as a bartender at the Palm Royale Country Club and looks after Norma. He believes she is simply concerned about Norma’s fortune and doesn’t really care about her health.

There’s more to Maxine and Robert than meets the eye, as Wiig and Martin explain to TODAY.com. It may be argued that Maxine perceives Robert as a threat and that viewers may not realize how much Maxine and Robert are alike.

“It’s not simple,” Martin informs TODAY.com. “It’s complicated because I don’t like her at all, but I think that’s because I see so much of her in myself at first.”

He goes on, “I think that’s the situation with Robert; I want to feel like I belong and I also want to belong,” saying that Robert has been “embraced by the matriarch of society,” Norma Delacorte, and that “she wants to steal that from me a little bit.”

Maxine is at the country club when Robert brings her favorite beverage, a grasshopper, in the first episode. He tells her that they “sent someone out for it” in response to her exuberance about finding crème de cacao for her drink.

When Maxine asks Robert whether she needs to sign a bill for her drink, she lets it be known that she may not be a member of the club.

“Pardon me?” asks a bewildered Robert.

“Did I spill something?” Maxine snaps, to which Robert firmly responds, “In a manner.”

 

Despite being one of the most sincere characters on the program, Robert is a veteran of the Korean War and also has a few secrets of his own. Wiig claims that Maxine, who is attempting to move on from her previous life, is threatened by this.

“I believe that when Robert discovered who Maxine really was, it made him her greatest threat because, in my opinion, he was the only one who truly understood who she was,” Wiig says. Douglas is aware that she is attempting to gain access to these ladies and this group, but he is unaware of all the things I am doing to do so. And I simply can’t stop being busted.

Maxine thinks as though she should “keep (Robert) away from everything because he really knows” her secrets, according to Wiig. “I believe that’s what first drives us truly away, but in the end, it’s what kind of pulls us together.

 

Martin agrees with Wiig that their characters’ connection is changing.

He quips, “It morphs into so much love because, oh my god, she’s beat up.” She is getting beaten up all the time, and I witness it firsthand. At first, I even participated in it, but after a while, I just grabbed her hand and told her, “Come on, I’m going to hold you.” I promise to keep you safe.

Martin does, however, hint that there will be ups and downs in the intensity in the next episodes. Robert “gets upset with her again because she’s protecting (Douglas) over me,” the man claims. It’s perplexing, but that’s what makes our connection so magical.
