Chelsea star’s father criticizes owners and devises escape strategy for son.
Ian Maatsen’s father has criticized Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly and others and wants his son to turn his loan spell at Borussia Dortmund into a permanent deal.
It’s been nothing short of a disaster since BlueCo took over Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in 2022, with the club struggling massively on the pitch ever since.
Chelsea’s owners spent over £1 billion on players, sacked two head coaches, endured fan protests, and made a series of public slurs.
Maatsen’s father has now directed his own criticism at Chelsea’s hierarchy, publicly accusing them of putting money ahead of the club’s interests.
“Things have not been going well at Chelsea since they changed hands,” Maatsen’s father told the Dutch portal Voetbal International.
“In that club, a lot revolves around money, which sometimes seems more important than the interests of the club.
It was reported last month that Maatsen told Chelsea he wanted to join Dortmund on a permanent deal at the end of the season.
The left-back, believed to have a €35-40m release clause, joined Dortmund on loan in the January transfer window and the German side are understood to be desperate to keep him at the Westfalenstadion.
“We are working to stay at the club [Dortmund],” added Maatsen’s dad.
“Clubs have to fight it out among themselves. Ian is developing well here.
“We have more options besides Chelsea and Dortmund, but Dortmund proved to be a good restart. And look at the guys that come from there… [Jude] Bellingham, [Erling] Haaland.”
Maatsen spent last season on loan at Burnley and helped Vincent Kompany’s side secure the league title as he was named in the Championship team of the season.
Chelsea wanted to sell Maatsen last summer and even accepted a £31.5m bid from Burnley before he rejected a permanent move to Turf Moor.
The west Londoners were again open to a sale in January, but Maatsen eventually moved to Dortmund on loan.
“I always believed [I could] play for Chelsea, but unfortunately for some reason, it didn’t work out the way it should have,” Maatsen said earlier this year.
“I’m here now and I’m very grateful for the opportunity. I can say that I am very proud of myself.’
