“In a report from Jerusalem by Lorenzo Tondo and Sufian Taha, concerns arise for children among cancer patients fearing potential repatriation to Gaza by Israeli authorities. The patients, including minors, find themselves in a state of uncertainty while receiving treatment at a hospital in East Jerusalem.”

Access to Augusta Victoria Hospital was granted to The Guardian, revealing a distressing situation where at least 22 Gazan patients requiring critical advanced cancer treatment are held in fear of deportation. These patients, like many others, had received authorization for medical care outside of Gaza before the October 7 strike by Hamas due to the inadequate facilities available in the region.

However, since the commencement of hostilities, hospital administrators have been instructed by Cogat, the Israeli defense ministry department overseeing civilian matters in the occupied Palestinian territory, to compile a list of patients who have been approved for discharge and are slated to be returned to Gaza.

After repeatedly urging political change, the US now applauds the newly elected Palestinian administration.

09:18

According to the Associated Press (AP), the US has hailed the establishment of a new Palestinian autonomous administration and indicated that it accepts the updated cabinet makeup as a first step toward Palestinian political reform.

In an effort to enable it to oversee the Gaza Strip when the Israel-Hamas conflict concludes, the Biden administration has advocated for “revitalizing” the Palestinian Authority, which is situated in the West Bank.

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said the US looks forward to working with the new set of ministers “to deliver on credible reforms” in a statement late on Friday, according to the AP.

Miller emphasized, “The well-being of the Palestinian people in both the West Bank and Gaza, as well as fostering stability in the broader region, hinges upon a revitalized Palestinian Authority.”

In certain areas of the West Bank under Israeli occupation, the administration is managed by the Palestinian Authority, led by President Mahmoud Abbas, who has remained in power without facing an election for almost two decades.

In its post-conflict plans for Gaza, the United States deems the Palestinian Authority as indispensable. However, due to its security cooperation with Israel in the West Bank, the authority faces limited public support or credibility among Palestinians, who perceive it as an agent of the occupying force.

Earlier this month, President Abbas appointed US-educated economist Mohammad Mustafa as prime minister. According to the AP, Mustafa unveiled his initial lineup on Thursday, which includes notable technocrats, Abbas’s interior minister, and several members of the secular Fatah movement that he leads. While it remains uncertain if any of the ministers currently reside in Gaza, it’s notable that some of them have origins in the region.

Abbas’s adversary, the Islamic militant organization Hamas, pushed his security forces out of Gaza in a coup in 2007. Both Israel and Hamas have rejected the US proposal for a reconstituted Palestinian Authority to take control of Gaza.

According to reports, the US permits the shipment of billion-dollar bombs and planes to Israel.

08:59

According to two people involved with the initiative, the US has approved the delivery of bombs and fighter planes worth billions of dollars to Israel in recent days, despite public statements from Washington expressing worries about an expected Israeli military attack in Rafah.

More than 1,800 MK-84 2,000lb bombs and 500 MK-82 500lb bombs are part of the new armament supplies, according to the sources, who verified a Washington Post article.

Washington provides Israel, a longstanding friend, with $3.8 billion in military aid each year.

The shipment is dispatched amidst global condemnation of Israel’s continued bombing campaign and ground invasion in Gaza, with some Democrats urging President Joe Biden to cease US military aid.

Despite the swift provision of air defenses and weaponry to Israel by the US, the Biden administration’s steadfast support for Israel has faced scrutiny from specific Democrats and Arab American organizations, who argue that it fosters a sense of impunity for Israel.

Friday saw Biden recognizing “the widespread anguish” felt by many Arab Americans regarding the Gaza War and US support for Israel’s military actions.

However, despite growing differences between him and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Biden has reaffirmed his commitment to stand by Israel.

Regarding the transfer of arms, the White House maintained silence.

The Israeli embassy in Washington did not respond immediately to a request for comment.

Gaza is still experiencing fighting despite the UN Security Council’s urging for an “immediate ceasefire.”

08:41

Notwithstanding a legally binding UN Security Council decision earlier this week calling for an “immediate ceasefire,” fighting continued unabatedly in Gaza on Friday, especially around its few operational hospitals.

According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), the health ministry of the zone ruled by Hamas has reported that many deaths occurred throughout the course of the night.

Twelve of them were murdered at their residence in the southern city of Rafah, which has been regularly blasted in advance of an alleged Israeli ground operation.

Images from AFPTV showed men working by the light of cell phones to liberate individuals stuck beneath the rubble.

The Israeli military initiated a raid on Shifa Hospital early last week, stating on Friday that it was “continuing precise operational activities there.”

While the army suspects that Palestinian militants have reoccupied the area, troops entered al-Shifa hospital for the first time in November. During the recent operation at al-Shifa, approximately 200 insurgents were reportedly killed.

A 44-year-old mother of seven, Amany, shared her experience of enduring constant Israeli bombardment in the Shati refugee camp in northern Gaza.

Opening summary

08:37

It’s currently 10:30 a.m. in Tel Aviv and Gaza. Welcome to The Guardian’s latest live blog covering the ongoing Middle East crisis and the Israel-Gaza conflict.

On Friday, two sources reported that the US has authorized the shipment of bombs and fighter planes worth billions of dollars to Israel, despite public concerns from Washington about a potential Israeli military operation in the southern city of Rafah.

The latest armament supplies reportedly include over 1,800 MK-84 2,000lb (900kg) bombs and 500 MK-82 500lb bombs, as confirmed by the sources, who corroborated a Washington Post article.

The White House has chosen not to issue a response at this time.

Meanwhile, Gaza’s few operational hospitals were among the areas where violence continued unabatedly on Friday. Dozens of individuals were slain overnight in Gaza, according to the Ministry of Health operated by Hamas, 12 of whom died in their Rafah house.

♦In more noteworthy developments:

♦The health ministry of the Gaza Strip reported that the death toll from Israel’s offensive since October 7 has risen to at least 32,623, with 75,092 injuries.

♦On Friday, the US State Department acknowledged, one day after the UN’s highest court instructed Israel to permit food aid into the enclave, that famine likely already exists in some areas of northern Gaza and that additional regions are at risk of starvation. A government spokesperson emphasized the need for more vehicles to deliver relief.

♦According to two security sources speaking to Reuters, Israeli airstrikes early Friday targeted the Syrian city of Aleppo in the north, resulting in casualties including five members of the Hezbollah terrorist organization. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights indicated that the strike was aimed at a site near Hezbollah missile storage.

♦Meanwhile, the Israeli military reported that it had targeted the Bazouriye region of Lebanon in an airstrike, resulting in the death of Ali Abed Akhsan Naim, the deputy commander of Hezbollah’s rocket and missile division.

♦Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has announced his approval to send delegates to Egypt and Qatar for a new round of negotiations. These talks aim to secure the release of Israeli captives as a potential condition for a ceasefire agreement in Gaza. Despite robust efforts by the US and other mediators, discussions between Egypt, Qatar, and involved parties have reached a standstill in recent days, delaying hopes of reaching a truce before the conclusion of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

♦The US State Department welcomed the appointment of a new Palestinian Authority government, emphasizing the importance of a “revitalized” authority to deliver results for the Palestinian people and foster stability in the wider region. In a related development, the US denied reports alleging that it had relaxed penalties against seven Israeli settlers and two agricultural outposts in the West Bank, contrary to claims made under pressure from Israel’s finance minister.
