Real Madrid eliminated Manchester City from the Champions League with a 4–4 aggregate tie, as Bernardo Silva missed a critical penalty in the shootout.

Bernardo Silva was criticized by Manchester City supporters for allowing him to miss a critical penalty during the shootout with Real Madrid. The ball was ultimately dropped down to the ground after the home fans held onto it for forty seconds, leaving Bernardo waiting near the penalty spot.

Andriy Lunin, the goalie for Madrid, stopped his subsequent penalty, which led to City’s elimination from the competition. Mateo Kovacic was one of City’s five missed penalties as the team finished the game with an aggregate score of 4–4.

After Ederson gave City more hope by stopping Luka Modric, Julian Alvarez had given them optimism with the first penalty. But Real Madrid converted four flawless penalties following Kovacic’s miss, with Antonio Rudiger sealing the win and setting up a semifinal matchup with Bayern Munich.

Former City player Joleon Lescott emphasized the significance of Bernardo Silva’s hesitation in taking his penalty as he looked back on the game.

He said, “That would have just taken him out of sync and out of his rhythm,” in an interview with TNT Sports. You don’t prepare for this; the ball is in the crowd, but you may practice the routine, technique, and possible walk-up.”

Lescott went on to say, “That’s a long time.” Even though it might not seem like much, waiting there and considering whether to shift positions takes a lot of time. Do I now go somewhere else? And suddenly it’s a light punishment.”

Ferdinand voiced his disappointment at the state of affairs, saying: “It’s a shame though as well because it’s the home fans that are delaying that penalty kick which is a shame.”

Although Rodrygo’s goal gave City an early lead, City dominated much of the game. Their efforts were rewarded at 77 minutes when Kevin De Bruyne’s equalizer brought the score to 1-1, but Pep Guardiola’s team was unable to get a second goal.
