TOKYO – The carbon footprint of their environmentally friendly team uniforms will give Japanese competing in Paris this summer something more to be proud of than a medal.

Asics unveiled Team Japan’s official uniforms on Wednesday, stating that the jackets, pants, and other clothing competitors would wear on the podium and at press conferences would bear a stamp that represents the amount of carbon dioxide emitted during manufacturing as a tribute to the host city’s green initiatives.

The carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e) released during the manufacture of the team’s warm-up suit jacket are 8.8 kg, while the CO2e emissions from their bottoms are 5.5 kg.

“We stuck to that idea because the Paris Games are supposed to be the most environmentally conscious event in Olympic history,” stated Makoto Ohori, manager of Asics’ clothing and equipment development.

The Tokyo-based business said that by utilizing lighter, recyclable materials and renewable energy at its Japanese manufacturing, it was able to cut emissions on the official kits by around 34% from the previous Games in Tokyo.

The objective of Paris 2024 is the most ambitious to date: to half the carbon footprint compared with the average of 3.5 million tons of CO2 emissions in previous Summer Olympics. Showcasing green credentials has been an obligatory feature of recent Games.

“By figuring out the carbon footprint of each item and labeling it on the products, we hope to boost transparency as well as raise awareness among athletes towards the environment,” Asics’ Ohori said.

According to experts from the United Nations, reducing global greenhouse gas emissions by half by 2030 is essential to preventing an increase in average global temperatures of more than 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit). This month, the head of an international climate organization declared that the world had two years to act to prevent even more severe climate change.

According to Tokyo 2020’s organizers, nearly all non-consumable materials were recycled and emissions were decreased by using hydrogen-powered electricity and vehicles at the previous, pandemic-delayed Summer Games in 2021.
