By 5 p.m. on April 24, anybody lacking the required identity must apply online at gov. UK/application-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate for a voter authority certificate.

The Elections Act 2022 included photo ID regulations, which the government claimed were required to reduce the possibility of in-person voting fraud.

The conditions were initially put into effect during the English local elections held last year.

According to an Electoral Commission investigation, at least 14,000 voters, or 0.25% of the total, did not cast a ballot in those elections because they were unable to present a valid form of photo identification at the polling place.

Based on data from the PA news agency, there have been about 35,155 applications for a voter authority certificate (VAC) so far this year, including 1,474 on Tuesday.

In the week ending April 16, there were 943 VAC applications on average each day, which was an increase from 866 the week before and 548 two weeks prior.

In the last week, just 7% of VAC applications were submitted by those under 25, while 3% were submitted by those 75 years of age or older.

Applications from those aged 55 to 64 made up 29% of the total, followed by those from 45 to 54 (22%), 35 to 44 (17%), 25 to 34 (12%), and 65 to 74 (9%).
