On Thursday, the United States overcame Jamaica 3-1 in extra time to go to the CONCACAF Nations League championship in Texas, and substitute Haji Wright was the hero once again.

Wright, the striker, gave Coventry City an unexpected English FA Cup victory over Wolves on Saturday by scoring the game’s winning goal in injury time. The reigning champions scored twice more in extra time at the AT&T Stadium.

The arduous triumph secured a final matchup on Sunday with Mexico, who emerged victorious 3-0 against Panama in the other semifinal of the evening.

Coach Gregg Berhalter only selected Wright for the US team on Sunday, following Norwich City attacker Josh Sargent’s late withdrawal due to an ankle ailment.

Nonetheless, the Los Angeles native, 25, replaced Timothy Weah in the 63rd minute and went on to provide an important game-winning cameo.

In minute 96, Wright scored his first goal, grabbing a clever feed from Gio Reyna, another replacement, and firing low past Jamaican goalie Andre Blake.

In the 109th minute, the striker scored his second goal and made it 3-1 thanks to yet another excellent assist from Reyna.

“Grit and determination — it wasn’t a good start for us at the beginning of the game, but we found our way back and then came away with a two-goal lead at the end,” Wright said.

“The start of my season wasn’t so great so I just had to keep pursuing and trusting in my abilities and trying to do what I do best.”

After not making the starting lineup, Reyna was motivated to take advantage of his opportunity.

“As a group, we pride ourselves on being ready when they’re ready — and Haji and I were both ready tonight,” Reyna said.

“We simply tried to make stuff, and fortunately, I was able to locate him after he made two fantastic runs. But he overcame the difficult task and stored them.”

– The contentious equalizer

Jamaica suffered a heartbreaking loss as they had led 1-0 from the first minute of regular time until giving up a contentious equalizer with what ended up being the final kick of stoppage time after ninety minutes.

After US defender Miles Robinson flicked the ball on a corner, Jamaican replacement Cory Burke cannoned it off the post and into the net to tie the score at one.

Six minutes of stoppage time saw the goal that gave rise to the controversial equalizer. The match officials had signaled an additional four minutes of time a little while ago, but they modified it to five minutes without giving a reason.

Jamaica had a significantly diminished starting lineup for Thursday’s semi-final because of injuries and bans to many important players.

Amari’i Bell, Leon Bailey of Aston Villa, and Michail Antonio of the English Premier League were all sidelined due to injury, while Ethan Pinnock was dismissed for disciplinary reasons.

Demarai Gray, a former striker for Everton, and Shamar Nicholson were both suspended.

Even yet, for extended stretches of time, it seemed as though Jamaica had done enough to pull off an incredible shock, even though the US had long dominated possession and territory.

In less than 30 seconds, Bobby DeCordova-Reid capitalized on a mistake made by US defender Antonee Robinson to set up Greg Leigh for a header that gave Jamaica the lead. The Oxford United defender then outmuscled Joe Scally to tip in the goal.

The United States surrounded the Jamaican goal, creating opportunity after opportunity only to be thwarted by resilient defense.

However, Berhalter’s team gained an immediately more menacing dimension with the addition of Reyna after halftime, and the move paid off with two outstanding assists.
